This course will discuss various complementary and alternative medicine practices used in the Central Appalachian region. Students will gain an understanding of the role of faith in Appalachian culture and how religion impacts health beliefs and practices. Upon completion of assignments students will learn how to locate, identify, preserve and mount a local plant specimen as well as how to prepare an herbal tincture. All herbal plants/medicines discussed are either indigenous to the Appalachian region or have been transplanted long enough to have been assimilated into the culture and traditions of people native to the area.
